Transform data format from long format to wide format

The two most common data structures in use are wide format data tables and long format data tables. The wide format data table is used where every parameter or variable is stored in its own column. The long format is generally used where data is contained in two columns, the first for the data label and the second for the data value.

Step 1: Select the data from the left file tree or from “files” tab which needs to be manipulated.

Step 2: Once you select the file, it will be opened in the “Data Wrangler”.

Step 3: Click on the “Long to wide format” and a popup will appear.

Step 4: The files that you have open will appear in two tree views:

  • Step 1: select the column which represents the ‘values’.
  • Step 2: select the column which represents the column headings that relates to those values.

Step 5: The default “Result” is to overwrite the original file with the updated file.

Select what you want to save as your output file from the “output” drop down menu.

If you want to keep the original file along with your updated file then, click on “Keep all columns” or “only keep selected columns” under “create new file”. Click “run”. The new file will be saved in the same folder as original file.
