Create a Scatter chart

A scatter chart is used to show the relationship between two collections. The independent variable is placed on the X-axis (horizontal axis) and dependent variable on Y-axis (vertical axis).

Important

To create a scatter chart, you must first create a dashboard on which to add it.

Step 1: Select “Charts” in the menu bar to view all the Chart visualisation options.

Step 2: Select “Scatter Chart” option.

Note: The default scatter chart will be placed on your Dashboard. Drag it to wherever you want by grabbing the header and you can resize it by dragging the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Click “Edit”    menu on the chart header to edit your chart’s data, appearance and social media settings.

Link data to your chart

Step 4: To link data to the chart, select the “Data” tab in the edit popup, select the data file from the left file tree.  The file will open in the right data selection area. For a time series chart, only data with a date-time column can be selected.

Step 5: Select your columns which you want to represent on the chart. Click on “Choose as x” and “Choose as y” the columns you want to represent as the values on chart.

Note: For “choose as x”, your file should have date-time column associated with it. You can check the datatype of column by clicking the column in “Data Wrangler”.

Note: If you want to select specific data to use as error values, you can select those columns from the tab area named “Error bars”.

Step 6: A preview of your chart will be generated (the box with the black border). You can resize the preview by pulling the bottom left corner.

Style scatter chart

Style each data series (lines and points on the chart) by altering the options in the ‘Data Series’ tab.

All Series options

“All Series” selection allows you to manage settings that apply across all series such as stacking and range.

  • Hover: It will show the values when you hover over the chart.
  • Line style:It will allow you to choose to join the points on a scatter plot.

Series style options

  • Name: name of the layer.
  • Type: The type of that particular layer; line or column.
  • Y-axis: to manually reset the Y-axis of the chart.
  • Axis: by default, the series uses the left Y-axis, but you can switch to using a secondary Y-axis (right Y-axis) to allow you to show two different scales on the same chart.
  • Error-bars:
  • Same +ve and –ve: same error in both directions.
  1. Error: set whether the error is represented as “Data” in a column, or defined below.
  2. Error Data: Select the error column if error is represented in the data file.
  3. Error Type: If error is not contained in a column in the data file, you can define the error as a percent of the underlying data, a fixed value, the standard error or the standard deviation of the underlying data column.
  4. Error Value: relates to the error type selected.
  5. Styles: Style the error bars.
  • Difference +ve and –ve: different positive error and negative error.
  1. The same settings as same +ve and –ve can be applied to both the positive and negative error representation.
  • Hide: default behaviour is to show no error bars.
  • Legend: The information to understand the chart better.
  • Fill under:
  • Line: the line for the selected layer.
  • Marker: to mark the points on the selected layer with the styles, border (thickness of points) and number (amount of marking points).

Global style options

Style the overall look of the chart by altering the options in the ‘Global Styles’ tab.

  • Title: title of the chart.
  • Title-font: the properties of the title which is font, size and colour.
  • Background: the background colour of the chart.
  • Font: the properties of the font in the chart like font, size and colour.
  • Background: the background of the legend.
  • Margin: the top, bottom, left and right margin.
  • Padding: the padding around the chart.

Legend style options

  • Font: font of the legend.
  • Visible: if the legend needs to be visible or hidden.
  • Background: background colour of the legend.
  • Border: the border and its colour around the legend.
  • X-position: the position of the legend with respect to x-axis.
  • Y-Position: the position of  the legend with respect to y-axis.

X-axis style options

  • Name: name of the axis.
  • Font: properties of the name of the axis.
  • Range: set the maximum range of the X axis.
  • Axis line: visibility of axis line (show or hide).
  • Grid line: visibility line of grid line (show or hide) and its width.
  • Zoom: to allow the user to zoom on the chart. Interactive allows simultaneous zooming on both X and Y Axis.
  • Zero line: include the zero line on the chart.

Y-axis style options

  • Name: name of the axis.
  • Font: properties of the name of the axis.
  • Mode: toggle the Y axis to linear or logarithmic (base 10) scale.
  • Range: set the maximum range of the Y axis.
  • Axis line: visibility of axis line (show or hide).
  • Grid line: visibility line of grid line (show or hide) and its width.
  • Zoom: to allow the user to zoom on the chart. Interactive allows simultaneous zooming on both X and Y Axis.
  • Zero line: include the zero line on the chart.

Edit the settings of your visualisation for sharing on social media

To edit the information that will accompany the chart when sharing on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), select the ‘Social’ tab.

Share your visualisation

Share your visualisation or the entire dashboard using “Share” tab under “Dashboards”.
